Collecting it on Saturday...

I've just had a call to say the long awaited book 'Rift' by Beverley Birch has arrived in the bookshop. But I can't collect it until Saturday....but I'll be down first thing. I'm eagerly awaiting my sit on the sofa, hot cup of cocoa and the chance to read. I might not even do the house work.

My son's trip to Birmingham was good. He didn't remember to take any photo's so I can't show you. But he came back with a T'Shirt, posters and other bits. I was surprised that he didn't buy any Warhammer figures. After all he did take £70 with him. But he wasdisappointedd that most of the figures he would have wanted run out before he got to thebeginningg of the queue. "Never mind," he says "I'll buy some down the shop!"

I'm still finishing the first draft my latest novel for 7-9's. I did hope to have finished by now, but the characters had other ideas. But the end is in sight...

Warhammer Convention...

After an early morning dropping my son off to catch the coach to Birmingham (6am up at 4:30 to cook sausages for his lunch time roll) I'm beginning to flag. My stomach believes its lunch time and is shouting loudly! My eyes are asking to go back to sleep (the dogs nextdoor were barking until 1am) then I had to get up to let the cat out. She'd decided it was morning and I should be feeding her too. (She didn't get any food, well not until 6:15 when I arrived back home). She's now happily sleeping on my bed and I'm about to attack a pile of ironing. Where is the fairness?
My son has been looking forward to this convention for months and has been saving up to buy loads of stuff. His words not mine. I'm hoping he is going to take some photos that I can load up here for you to see the fun of the whole day.
With the whole day ahead, I'm aiming to finish the last pages of my latest novel and get the first draft printed off. In a way I'm looking forward to sticking it in a drawer and leaving it to mature before I get to do my first re-edit.
I'm about to start reading Seeker by William Nicholson. I'm really looking forward to this the first book in the trilogy - The Noble Warriors.
I'm also eagerly awaiting the book launch of Rift by Beverley Birch which is due out in October.
I've just finished the saga of Darren Shan Bampire Blood trilogy. The Darren Shan books were great. If you have a child of 12+ they will love these. My Son (15) has on order the next book due out in October and has read all and has all of the Darren Shan books. They way they are written really appeals to boys. Once I've finished Seeker and Rift I'll be returning for the next Darren Shan. All this and also writing my own children's books.
That's it for now...

What a week!

What a horrid week! and to top it all it's raining. Not just a little but bloody great clouts of rain bashing on the top of my head when I was dragging my shopping in from the car. 130 foot to drag it down and through the garden without cover. And I had to do the run twice...I'd bought too much and too many heavy things. This does mean now I have food. Well I'll have some until my son finds it!!

On the writing front, I'm getting to the final parts of Troggle my latest 7-9 year book. But I've been sneaking off and building my own website. Its far from ready but I seem to have mastered the hyperlink. Now I have to work out what I want to put on each section. They'll be lists of my children's books, drama workshops and resources, ICT lesson plans (KS1 & KS2), ideas for after school clubs along with resources for each of these areas. This has led to me considering writing educational book for ICT lessons. Strangely I hadn't thought of this before. I've not yet produced a non-fiction book, this would be my first.

I've discovered the latest writing competition I've entered hasn't sent back my acknowledgment card. This is bad. I sent in my best picture book story and hope it has arrived. I can't contact them until Monday this weekend will seem a long one until I can phone and check. I'm hoping I've still got time to resubmit.

I must dash now as I've got to get some serious writing done. Until next time....

One for Island Girl...

Good morning. I've just popped up to add a little message for my Writers' News online members. If you want to build a blog like mine, it is easy. You just follow the instructions on the screen. You can select any background design and you can make it your own. It really is easy.
You can ask me any questions you like and if I can answer them then I will. Just leave a message and I'll get back to you either here, or on the talkback post in writing queries - Blogs are easy to set up...I'm not superwoman!!

My day today is going to be working on the last chapter of my latest novel. I'm hoping to have it completed by the end of the week (don't hold me to that!), but if all goes to plan.... We all know what happens to plans.

So that is it for now....

Just a quickie...

It's quick as I've got to go off and write. Burge, Byron and Meeka are demanding an audience and I have to submit to their demand. I've not been to visit them for a few days. In fact I've been in the foundation area working on my picture book series called 'I'm Books' which tell of the animals down at Boundary children's farm.
So this is it for now, if I can I'll write more later, if not I'll catch you tomorrow.

Cats

Oh, my...
I received a gift this morning....yes you guessed it- a fur ball. It was long, wet, grey and covered in slime. Just what you want to put your foot in first thing in the morning. At first in my fuzzed just woken state, I thought it was something more yucky. I've had that first thing in the morning, but it wasn't number two's, so I didn't have to clean it out from between my toes, no I just had to hobble through to the bath room and wash my foot. And all the time the cat, Mi Mi was sitting looking cute. How do they do that. Look so sweet when they've done something wrong? It is beyond me. Then they follow you to the kitchen and demand breakfast. Don't get me wrong I love my cat but....
And it hasn't stopped there. Oh, no! I've already tried to get on to the website I'm using to teach today, and I'm blocked out. Argh! I've got a proper log on and I'm putting it in correctly but no it won't let me in. And can I get any help at this time in the morning - NO! I've got to wait until nine am. What use is that! I'm in the classroom by then. Deep breath. And another and one for luck and I'm calmer. Well a little. I can't do anything about it yet so I'll have to get on with other things instead. Like proper writing. So I'm going to leave you now to do something that might pay at some point down the road.

Good Morning World

Well...

Now I've had a little scout around on a few other blogs, and it would appear that many are dormant. WHY? Could it be because no one is reading and leaving any comments? That could just be the answer. Thanks Andy, for your comment and anyone else who reads this, please leave a comment. It lets me know at least someone is reading this.

I was up early taking photo's of spider webs. They are beautiful at this time of year. The dew was caught on the fine silk threads and they glowed. I found three different types and I'm sure they all have a special name, but I don't know any. The misty morning warn of colder nights to come, but who cares when we can put the heating on and keep warm. Hang on! We can't all put the heating on. We have to think first: Food, heating, Food, heating. When are the government going to realise they are not helping with the extra payments they give out. They don't give them enough money to stay warm. Especially if you live in a council house with doors that don't fit and the council won't do anything to help. Hang on, Food, heating, new doors? See this is what happens, when you allow things to slide. Hey! I got a letter saying that my council, who are keen to be seen as an eco friendly council are going to replace my back boiler with a new snazzy one. Okay, brilliant, but the new heating from the new radiators that come with it is going to go straight out the gaps above and below the front and back doors. See I don't think that is right. I feel they should fix the doors too! I've been asking for two years now this will be the third, mind I might ask from an eco friendly point of view and if they don't help out, then I'll take it to the local paper. Hmmm, they won't worry, they'll just say I'll have to buy new ones myself. With what? I've got to think Food, heating, new doors and redecoration as they don't do that either. No they pull out all the old radiators, boiler and piping and leave you to redecorate all the rooms, as we have to do that it is in the tenacy agreement. Okay sorry about the rant, but it is getting to me.

Now I've got that off my chest...

My diary is full today. House work, a bore but has to be done, then on to finishing my latest novel. I'm almost there. I've two chapters to go and then I can start on the next. I don't (thankfully) have a problem with ideas, my problem is with time. Time to write. I have a good balance on the whole, but there are times when my writing time is taken up by family business. I think this is a problem for all writers who are working in the family home. I long for my own study where my muse and I can sit in peace and contemplate the work in hand. But this is not to be until I sell the first few of my books.
Things are getting more hopeful. I've gone from receiving just bog standard rejections to those with comments. I've also had a few agents/publishers ask to see full manuscripts, (which is a big step forward.) However I've still a long way to go.
You have to accept rejection as a step towards success. Each one a step closer. It is hard because each novel, short story, picture book is your creation and you have an attachment to it, but you have to realise no one else is going to feel quite the same as you do about your work. If you find one person who likes it, you are lucky. There are many writers out there wanting to get where I want to be and we are all competing with each other. The ones perhaps that make it are those who keep on going, come what may. Then at least you've given it you best shot. The day you give up could be the day before you were about to get the big YES. So I'm going to keep writing learning my craft. One day I'll be jumping for joy and clutching my first contract.
I'll keep you posted.

Catch you tomorrow.

Butterflies

Fragile Butterflies

A mind full of butterflies
Floating through my skin
Open up their trusting wings
And fly on the wind

Their golden dust of honesty
Dances lightly by my side
Offering up themselves to you
Permit them come inside

Tenderly they flutter down
Touch your heart unknown
Filter through the outer shell
And rest upon your mind

The wonder of love they hold
Has worked its magic touch
My mind full of butterflies
Have found their heart, their home.

Nunney

The Village of Nunney- Somerset.

We make our way across the bridge to the 16th Centruy Church.

With the ancient graves stones and the summer sun shining down on us we made our way towards the solid wooden (probably English Oak) doors, which were the entrance to theAs we went I took a few pictures and was particularly taken with this the next photo.

Charming walk

Because of this I wrote the following poem (free verse). As you will see I’m not much of a poet, but I hope you feel the sentiment behind it.

Rays of Promise

In silence the beauty shines
From rainbow fingers fine
Through filtered leaves they stream
A promise to perform.

When rainbows appear without the rain
A message of love is shown
To remind us all of the caring
From our beloved one.

Those that lay beneath are not forgotten
The rainbow finds them still
For those that stand upon the ground
The colours surround them all.

Special rainbows so rarely appear
Like winter butterflies
Should you be blessed to see one
Remember the message deep inside.

His love for you will always show
Through the colourful rays of promise
Allow yourself the honour
To be kissed by his tender lips.

Nunney - Somerset

I took this picture in a picturesque village in Somerset - Nunney.
I stumbled across it, well drove towards it when killing time. (We'd arrived at our holiday destination four hours early!!) I like to get where I'm going fast!! Well we stopped off and took a look at the ruins of Nunney Castle (a real one) although now derelict.

Hello!

This is my first attempt at writing a blog, so it might not be that good! However I'm sure I'll get better at it as I go along.
I've intended to start a blog for a couple of years, but have never had the time (read that as courage) to actually hit the keyboard. Now (having no excuses left) I've been gently pushed by a few writing friends from the Verulam Writers' Circle to have a go. So here goes.
I'm a writer of children's books and short stories, which are mainly focused in the land of fantasy. I love creating unusual characters and am know to cause them many unpleasant moments. But my life isn't wholly about fantasy.
The most recent children's books I've read are:
1. Otto and the Flying Twins - by Charlotte Haptie: This was an amazing book and I recommend it (its for children, but hey, I'm a big kid at heart).
2. The saga of Darren Shan - Vampire Blood Trilogy: I'm almost to the end of the first book and am enjoying it. I can see how boys from 12+ will be completely engaged .
3. The Sight-by David Clement-Davies: This is awesome. It had me engrossed and in tears. It is a must read.
Most recent read adult novels:
The works for Nora Roberts writing as J.D.Robb: A futuristic crime novel about female dectective Eve Dallas and the horrific crimes she encounters. A good read, not for the squeamish.
Thirty bytes of solitude by Lawrence Robinson (an uncorrected book proof): I obtained this front he London Book fair last year and found the discomfort of the familiar - all us writers do (so I'm told) Thankfully I've never hidden myself in a room for a month to find out how crazy I might go. And I'm not going to try. My son thinks I'm crazy enough as it is. Not only that I don't suppose I'd be able to hide away for more than an hour as the family would want feeding. But one can dream, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea after all!
My favourite adult novel todate is - A Crack in Forever, but I lent my book out to a friend who has moved away taking the book with her and I can't remember the author, which is awful. I must get another copy. It was a weepy. (Perhaps my son hid it?) Does anyone know the book?
Well that's it for now. Keep an eye out you never know what might turn up on here.
